Hi
I have users with two computers (both WinXP SP2) networked as a workgroup using a crossover cable. The file sharing and print sharing works perfectly. The host computer also has a dial-up internet connection. The client computer can initiate an internet connection via this host computer to access the internet. This system had been working perfectly.
The original client computer died recently so has been replaced with a new computer (still WinXP SP2). I did not setup the original computers but I have setup the connection again with the new computer and it is working properly except for one thing. Internet Explorer (v6) will not open any websites – it always displays the message - Page can’t be displayed.
Thus I assumed it was an IE problem. However, when the modem was connected directly to the client computer it could both establish a connection and IE worked perfectly opening a number of websites. Which makes me think it may not be an IE problem.
I’ve number quite a bit of searching on the Web and within Tek-tips, the things I have had them try so far are:
• Full virus scan of both computers - Nothing
• All updates loaded for XP and IE
• Ran the IEFix tool – no problems
• Uninstalled TCP/IP version 6 from the new computer (client)
• Checked that the Windows Firewall is off on the client computer. The firewall is ON on the host computer but the LAN connection and dialup are exceptions
• IE has been added to Norton’s Internet Worm Protection program list
• The client computer can ping another website successfully so I know the connection is established properly.
• Tried to uninstall the IPv6 Internet Connection Firewall but it doesn’t appear to be installed
They have run ipconfig/all on both computers. The only major setup difference is that the new client computer has the following:
Cannot load VDM IPX/SPX support – although Novell/Netware has never been installed.
Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface:
AND
Tunnel adapter Automatic Tunneling Pseudo-Interface:
Could these things be affecting IE?
Otherwise I’m stumped. My only other thoughts would be to do a total re-install of Windows XP or to try swapping the host and client computers around. But as this will require me to drive for 3 hrs I’d appreciate some advice (or as many options as possible) before I go back out there to fix this problem.
Cheers
Karen
