I inherited a database and to say the least it is a mess. I have to track attendance for certain days using a present, absent or excused. Does anyone have anything they have used in the past that might be close to what we might need? I have considered using Excel for the dates in a column and using the P, A, or E in that but the dates do not import into Access very well. We are using Access 2002.

Thanks

So you don't just track the days absent. You have to verify each days status? You could set the Default Value for a textbox to todays Date() so that any attendance taken today would automatically include the current date in the record (and allow you to change the date if necessary). Then you would just fill in the Name and Status (Present, Absent, Excused)

I assume you have a table with attendees for each class. Each day of the class you want to add a record for each attendee for that class with a status?

This would be very easy to do with a form. On the form you would enter the class and the date you are working with. Run a query to populate the attendance table with the class ID, attendee ID, date, and default "P" status. Then just update the E's and A's.

Another design for the attendance table (what Paul alluded to) is to just track the E's and A's. It would reduce the amount of records and time involved for maintenance. You would do a left join with the attendees table and if there wasn't a record for a date, assume they were present.
