Word XP - Not enough memory or disk space to display the picture.

I have a 113-page Word document with many photos and a lot of formatting. I keep getting the message "There is not enough memory or disk space to display or print the picture." The computer has 512MB RAM 1.8 MHz clock speed and is only using 6.06 GB on a 15.6 GB partioned drive. About half of the pictures are displaying as small square white boxes. I can open these photos in "Edit Picture" mode but true to the error message I cannot display or print the pages with the photos. I didn't see anything regarding this on the MS Office website. I did download Office XP Service Packs 1 & 2 and also Word 2002 Update but the problem still persists. The machine is running Windows XP.

After wrestling with this a little more I am beginning to suspect this is caused by a network problem. I copied two of the pages to a new file and saved new the file on my hard drive. This new file contained 4 graphics, only 1 of which showed up. The other three were white square boxes that I mentioned in the original post. The odd thing is on 2 of those squares I can select them and choose Edit => Picture Object => Convert and have it convert to a Microsoft Word Picture. At this point the square becomes the size of the photo but it is still white. When I go back and open the picture it actually becomes visible in the Edit Picture window. But as soon as I close that window the box goes back to being white and does not display. Has anyone run into this before? I'm trying to avoid going back and reposting 64 photos but its looking like I'm going to have to do just that (presumably after breaking the file down into several documents).

I am also encountering this same problem. My research on the internet shows others experience the same problem, yet I can find no answer anywhere. Did you manage to solve it in the end?

this may not be a Word problem but more a printer memory problem. check your printer memory size/cache.

i know that to print some large cadd files we needed to get 1gb memory capable printer setup.

Don't quote me on this as it has been over a year since my original post. But I think what caused this issue was the file that I was referring to was on a network server. When I went to print the file I had to do so on a machine using an earlier version of Word and earlier OS (NT or W98) than the machine on which I created the document (because XP didn't support the driver to our network printer). This earlier version of Word would automatically save the document using the AutoRecover feature while it was open or either I absentmindedly would save the document. Then I would go back to the original machine and would find that the document had changed.

A similar incident occurred just two weeks ago when a co-worker was editing a big document (58,167 KB) with lots of photos on her Windows 98SE/Word 2000 machine after I had created it with my Windows XP Pro/Word XP machine. When she saved the document her machine froze and did not finish writing the file to the network, hence a corrupted file. I was able to use a 3rd party software called DocRepair to get back all of the text, most of the photos, and none of the formatting. Yet another lesson learned about backing up my files.
