I created rtf files using Word 97. I then sent these files to my boss. He can't open them using Word 97 on his computer. I can open the same files using my computer. Is it possible that he has a setting on his computer that is easily changed to allow him to read these files?

What are the symptoms - an error, garbled pages, or what?

Have you tried saving them as word files on your machine, and opening as word on his? If it works, can he then save as rtf?.

Kristeen, he's probably "lying" to you. The problem is more likely:

.. He is not viewing RTF as the file type when he hits File-Open

.. He's double-clicking them and they're asking what program he wants to open with and he's not answering

Go to his PC yourself. Hit File-Open. Can you change the file types to RTF files? If not, have your techies reinstall Office with all of the filters and converters.

What happens:
1)he double clicks on the rtf file in Windows explorer or opens word and asks it to open the file
2)Word opens with an error message saying that the file can not be opened because it does not have a .doc extension
( I have gone to his computer and tried it myself)

Hit Help-About on each PC. Do either/both of you have SR-1 or 2 or what?

Just to be sure, too. Some people get the new version installed (97) but still run the old version unknowingly, so double-check that.

If you can, try it on someone else's PC.

Can he open other files on that floppy?

Lemme know. We may do a registry edit next. If you have in-house techies, we should have them do it... If not, no problem.

Make sure that when he opens a file he has the File Type at the bottom set to "all files." If it's set to Word Document, Word won't even be able to see it.

Hello again, My apologies I was working on several problems and posted the wrong answer to yours. If I haven't completely lost crediblity, copy C:\Windows\system\MLANG.DLL from your system to the other one. Again, my apologies, I guess I don't multi-task very well.

You musta mist it, Linda. I already posted:

The problem is more likely:

The registry edit will prolly fix it, but they haven't posted any feedback lately. It's the same registry edit as in the "troubleshooting Word" FAQ.

Thanks for all the suggestions. We have figured out a way around it. He can open the files when he logs onto his computer rather than onto the network. We do not know what the problem is yet, but I don't have regular access to his system, so I will just let it go. Once again, thanks.

Try to reinstall Office97 on his machine, but this time, when it asks you the type of install, do custom. Then in custom click the "Select All" button to check every possible install features. He may be missing something that will not allow him to read the file. Are you sure he is using 97? Then try to open the file again
