I am trying to put a hyperlink in a document to another document on our file share server. No problems when I first put it there, all works. when I save it, word changes the link to ../../../path/path/path.doc and this doesn't work. i have tried putting the link in between <>, but it loses this on save also.
Has anyone had a similar problem, and if so, did anyone find a fix?
Thanks in advance
Word 2003 btw

Sussed it.
It all has to do with absolute and relative hyperlinks.
When you save a document that is on a file server, unless the file you are saving is in the same folder as the file you are linking to, Word will update the hyperlinks in the document to relative paths to itself. So, a link from a file in \\server1\path1\path2\path3\doc1.doc that links to \\server1\path1\path2\path16\path17\doc2.doc will change the hyperlink to ..\..\..\path16\path17\doc2.doc because it already knows about \\server1\path1\path2 as that is where is sits. when you try and click this from your PC, the link will not work as your PC knows nothing about a path that starts ..\..\..\.
Solution:
open Word, click Tools\Options. On the General tab, untick "Update automatic links at open" Click Web Options and on the Files tab, untick "Update links on save". click Ok and OK, open your document and you're away!
I do hope this helps someone, as it has cost me an hours hair-pulling today.
