word starts then closes after this error

do you have Mcafee anti virus installed??

Its an old FAQ, but one I wrote which might help >> faq68-1269.

This might be a template issue. Start word with /a switch and see if it works. If it does start without crashing, rename "Normal.dot" and start Word again, but this time without the /a switch.

Let me know how it goes, there are a bunch of other options we can try.

hello this switch i used worked!! I tried finding the download for McAffee but no luck. Yes I had McAfee but that gave problems I uninstalled and installed several times but it also kept shutting down. Oh by the way I have some windows coming up when I start something with IExplore but I just say ok the desktop disapears and then it all works this isn't also something to do with this mcafee problem??

Rename Normal.dot to something entirely different.Call it "bigdin.dot".

When Word opens up, it recreates Normal.dot automatically.

Try that.....

Although I have to say your description of the "other stuff" that happens, seems to suggest something a little more serious than a corrupt Normal.dot

well funny enough I can start word with the switch but when Ihave to download a word doc from an email the error window comes again and closes word. I'm not sure what you mean with this normal.dot. There are error windows when I start up these are the following;

window 1
VirusScanSynchMgrClass: Avsynmgr.exe - program error
instruction with "0x12029f77" refered memory with "0x00000008"
Memory could not read.

window 2
Explorer.EXE
instructionV with refered memory "0x733e05be"
Memory could not read

I have scanned several time with avg and shredder and regcure but they don't report problems...thanks

What I meant about Normal.dot, is locate it on your hard drive and the rename it, so Word can recreate it when you start Word up again.

But from the error messages, it may not be as simple as renaming Normal.dot.

I have to bow out, because I do not know enough about virus scanning machines to recommend a course of action.

This is a bug with MacAfee VirusScan. You will need to get an update to resolve the issue.
