Any time I open a Word document, Word opens the document then pops up a message saying:

"document.doc is already open by <me>. Do you want to make a copy?"

I know the document isn't open because I just rebooted my PC. This has happened every since I upgraded to Windows XP Pro. I'm using Word 97, yeah I know it's old but it serves the purpose.

Any ideas? The Microsoft knowledgebase USED TO HAVE a document for a fix for this specific problem. I say USED TO HAVE because it's gone now. It involved unregistering Word in the registry and then re-registering it.

Thanks,
Sean

You will probably achieve the same effect by uninstalling Office and re-installing it.

try CTRL+ALT+Delete, then end the other word applications... It happens to me all the times..

Hello Seanc7,

Try to rebuild the registry by running:
winword / r
see if its behaviour is back to normal.

Thanks Tsuji!!

That was the fix from the MS Knowledgebase I had found a few months ago and lost. It worked.

Thanks,
Sean
