I've a strange problem. When opening a document (written on a different PC) Word appears to hang for about 30 seconds then comes back with an error message that reads 'the printer has not yet responded, but the microsoft office program may be able to proceed without printer information. Do you want to continue to wait for the printer?'. I can't understand as everyone else seems to be able to open the file fine. Has anyone ever come across this before or any ideas on how to solve this? Thanks.
By the way its Word 2003 on an XP machine

For Starters:

Have tou tried deleting all your temp files?

Have you checked for virus's?

Have you tried Help > Detect and Repair (in Word)?

Hi, thanks for the response. I have tried all of the above and not had any luck. I have however, got a little closer to the cause. I think! The problem only appears when the document is opened and the default printer is offline?? This is not the case on any other machines I have access too and I can't believe would be either. I've tried searching Yahoo/google and the Microsoft knowledge base but can't find any reference to the symptoms or the error message. Any other ideas - Thanks!

I too am having this exact problem. Any tips appreciated! Thanks... JES

Hi Anne,

When going to "tools" "options" "print", I see the very same "hanging behavior" and the error message: "The printer has not yet responded, But the Microsoft Office program may be able to proceed without printer information. Do you want to continue to wait for the printer?"

I don't see a font choice in this options dialog... my default font for all docs is simply Times New Roman.

Thoughts on what I might be able to change to stop this?
Thanks,
Judy

Just a bit more clarification:

you say "When opening a document (written on a different PC) Word appears to hang"

Does the printer respond normally for all other documents created on your PC?

Is it just one document in particular (from another PC) causing the problem?

Hi, Im not Judy - But I think we have the same problem.
Documents written and opened on MY PC work fine. Its only when documents from OTHER PCs are opened the error message pops up.
Thanks

Hi AMS100 .... sorry for the name mixup.

you say "The problem only appears when the document is opened and the default printer is offline"

Have you checked your printer setup with others?
Start > Control Panel > highlite the printer in question > right mouse click and:

make sure "use printer offline" is not checked

click Properties and on the advanved tab check out if the print spooling is on or off etc.

essentially compare your settings to someone who dosen't have the problem.
