Whenever I double click on an existing document Word also opens a new document with "Header 1" in it.

Why? Is it a setting, or something in the default template?

How do I stop it?

Just a little bit more info please. Double click where? In Explorer? Does the document file you clicked on open correctly? It also opens a new document with "Heading 1" in it. Do you means that text ("Heading 1) appears in the new document?

Double click in either explorer or a desktop shortcut, or even a single click from recent documents.

The intended document opens correctly, as well as a new document, "Document1", with the text "Header1" in style of Header1.

Problem does not occur if Word is already open with another document.

Word 2002 on Windows 2000.

If Word is opened, it normally opens with a blank document. If you click on a Recent File, it does this? You state it does not do it if Word is open with another document. Does it do it under the above circumstance. technically there is another document, but it is not really a document yet, as it is not saved.

In any case, this is odd. There was another thread regarding style title text being inserted into a blank document. However, in that case ALL the basic styles were inserted as text.

1. have you removed all base styles, with just Heading 1 left?
2. have you recently had a recovered file? Something caused an error, and Word did a recovery?
3. have you any macros in normal.dot, or any global template that creates new files?

(sorry for the delay, been on hols)

The template is called Standard.dot

I've successfully amended it so that the HEADER1 no longer appears when I open a document, but it still opens a blank document when I open an existing one (unless another document is already open)

No macros are present in the template.
