I have a numbered list in Word.
When I have a list like 1,2,3,4,5, etc or 1.0,2.0,3.0, etc
everything is fine and the numbers automatically increment correctly when I press CR.

But as soon as I want to do 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, it stops working. When I press Cr the number stays the same as the previous one in the list!

I am currently having to change each item manually - what is going on?

Word 2000 SR1.

Thanks

arctis,

Did you format your numbering an outline style? Seems to work for me.

Can you give more info abount what is not working?

Hi ARCITS,

It should work, but I have found it fiddly to set up via the dialogs. Lots of questions before I can sort it out for you, I'm afraid. How have you set it up? What is the 2 in 2.0, 2.1, etc.? And what is the 0 in 1.0, 2.0, etc. which works? Are you using outline numbering? Are you using styles, or just formatting one or more individual lists?

Enjoy,
Tony

sorry if my explanation has been vague chaps.
I'll try to explain more.

my numbers are chapter subsections for paragraphs

I clicked on the numbered list toolbar button to get initially

1 or 1.0, etc (using the format, bullets menu option)

I am not sure what you mean by an outline style?

what i want to happen is each time i click the toolbar button (in some cases several paragraphs later) to get the next number in the sequence, i.e. 1.0, 1.1, etc

is there a tutorial on this somewhere that I can refere to?

Thanks

Hi ARCITS,

I don't know of any particular tutorial, but trial and error and the Help Files can go a long way.

Outline numbering / styles are to do with the structure of a Document; it sounds like you are not deliberately using them, which makes me repeat my questions. What is the "2" in 2.0, 2.1, etc. and how have you set it up? What do you actually get instead of the numbers you want? How did you set up the "0" in 1.0, 2.0, etc.?

I ask because I don't have problems when I try this. If I click on the numbered list icon and then select Format > Bullets and Numbering and apply a style, it forces my selection to be "Heading 2" style (that may be something to do with my setup). When I later click on the icon again, it automatically gives me "Heading 2" and an incremented number (2.1, following 2.0, as I think you want); if, at this point I look at the Format Dialog, it shows Continue Previous List selected under "List Numbering" (again this default may be to do with my setup and you may have to explicitly select it yourself).

Do you have any other numbered (or bulleted) lists between the numbered subsections? Not sure what else I can say without more detail.

Enjoy,
Tony

Thanks Tony and apologies that I am not explaining myself very well? It is difficult sometimes to express yourself well!
Can I make a suggestion? What about if you uploaded or e-mailed a sample document or I did and then either I could look at one of your working documents or you could look at one of my broken ones?

Let me know if this is ok?

Thanks Again Andy

Hi Andy,

Appreciate it can be very difficult to describe exactly.

If you like you can e-mail me your document - Tony at Jollans dot com - but what happens may be related to your normal.dot template so may not happen the same for me.

Enjoy,
Tony
