I have a spreadsheet with about 5600 records to be merged into a single Word letter. When I first attempted to retrieve the data source, I received "Word could not re-establish a DDE connection to Microsoft Excel to complete the current task". So I decided to split up the spreadsheet into smaller ones. I split the main one into 4 parts of around 1400 records each. The first part worked great and merged. The rest did not. So I split up the rest even further into spreadsheets of 700 records each. The first one of that batch worked, but the second did not. Does anyone have any possible solutions for this problem?

Thanks.

Nope. I doubt that's it, Wayne. Don't split them up.

Depending on your version of Office, you may have options. When you hit Get Data from Word, an "open"-type dialog comes up. You may have a checkbox that says "Select Method". Choose it. You should then be asked which method, choose Excel converter.

If you don't have that option, perhaps you need to Install Office again and, particularly for the Office Tools, choose "Run all from my PC" to be sure you've got all the proper converters. Brainbench MVP for Microsoft Word

Great! It worked. Thank you so much. You've saved me a lot of frustration and time.
