Since my first contribution fell flat (see thread1322-913976), I am trying another challenge:

What is the longest word in which letters can be removed one at a time, each one forming another word, until there are no letters left?
Example:

taint
tint
tin
in
i

Anyone?

Just let me get to my SQL server with the word list I loaded... hehe.

It is better to have honor than a good reputation.
(Reputation is what other people think about you. Honor is what you know about yourself.)

I can think of a 9-letter one...

--Chessbot

an 11-letter (10- and 11- are obscure)

--Chessbot

Is this the 9-letter list you had in mind?

Code:
 [white]
a
at
ate
late
latte
latter
platter
splatter
splatters
[/white]

no, but good one!

hint:
Code:
[white]I started with "I", not "A"[/white]

Am I allowed to use Latin words?

Merriam Webster lists them but sometimes says they are only available in the unabridged section. So I suppose by my own rules they must count...

ten letters:

Code:
[white]spirituous
minimisers (questionable)[/white]

Isn't [COLOR=white white]minimisers[/color] British?
And show your progression.

--Chessbot

Yes, it is the British spelling. Minimise is listed as a variante of minimize, and minimizers works, so I think it should be allowed. :)

As for the progressions, consider it another puzzle to figure them out! I'll post if no one gets it in a reasonable amount of time.

[white]minims is an alternate word for minimi[/white]

I have two more but each has a word I can't find in any dictionary :(

Yes, yes, you got the progressions with the one difference I gave.
