Hi There !

This is a weird problem, so be ready to loose some hairs...
I have approx 40 stations recently reinstalled with Windows 2000 SP2. On 2 of these, when saving a Word 2000 SR1 document on the network, the computer seems to freeze during 1 to 5 minutes. Then everything goes back to normal and the doc is saved.

This is not happening all the time.

The two computers are different (so it's not a hardware or drivers problem).

The servers are Windows 2000 based, with DNS, Wins & Dhcp.

I am desesperate to find a solution.
Every comment is welcome.

Thanks.

Can you post what you have tried already please? I think it's going to be one of those problems where you have to try a number of things to resolve it....

i would first disable the anti-virus app to see if that causes the problem

Thanks for your answers.
Here is what i have already done:

Reinstalled the whole PC
New network card
Disabled antivirus
Reinstalled microsoft office
All patches and latest drivers are installed
Checked the network cables

If you save locally only - no problem.
It's only happening when saving on the network.

Here is what i found lately, it's something about Oportunitic locking under windows 2000 server.
I've changed a few settings on the file server and i'm waiting for the user feedback.

Does anyone have already heard about this ?

Thanks.

Thank God I aint the only admin with this problem got 5 out of 50 users with the same problem done all the folowing as well

Reinstalled the whole PC
New network card
Disabled antivirus
Reinstalled microsoft office
All patches and latest drivers are installed
I even replaced the network cables all the way to the POP.

Office 2000 SP3 has some slow down issues I cant remeber what they are off the top of my head but I will post from work what they are

Well I think it's pretty safe to say that a clean install of Windows 2000 (both on server and client) would perform fine when saving with Word 2000. It must be something else that you've added to the either the server or clients. Some third party bit of software. If you just had Office 2000 installed and nothing else, and a nice clean server then it would work fine. What else have you got installed on the server and clients? And is there anything between the server and clients that could be causing a problem?

Of course the install is not clean - a working environment is never "clean" :)
We have many windows 2000 servers, dns, wins, exchange server, arcserve, watchguard firewall, antigen etc... running on those servers.

But the solution is: opportunistic locking !
Look around into google - this seems to be a very rare problem - but in my case, it was exactly the solution.

If anyone's got the same problem, please drop a mail & i will be more than happy to help.

Greetz to all of you.

i have the same situation and some more about the behavur of server 2000 with som specific clients.
some time the thing that helped was to remove the user from the user list and to build from start a one for the client. i think you should try that.
