I am having a problem with Excel OLE objects stored in Word documents. If I create a blank Word document I can use insert, object, Microsoft Excel Worksheet to add an Excel object. This immediately takes me into editing mode and I am able to change the contents of the worksheet object. If I then click away from the object to another area of the Word document the worksheet object remains visible as it does if I save the Word document and reload it. My problem comes when I later double click the object to edit it further, I then get the message 'Word Cannot Open The Document: user does not have access privileges'.

The problem seems isolated to Word as I can insert and reedit worksheet objects in Microsoft Publisher quite happily. I have run the Word detect and repair option which detected no problems. The problem only started today and I have restored from yesterday's restore point which made no difference. I have also deleted the normal.dot template just in case that was corrupt.

Can anybody help? Many thanks

Paul

Thanks for that. Yes the problem does indeed seem to be related to anti-virus software, although not as the Microsoft article suggests of my signature files being out of date as they are updated automatically by Mcafee, it appears that a virus actually got through and managed to switch off my anti-virus software within the last couple of days (about same length of time as symptoms were showing). My AV software was unable to locate the virus when reinstalled and continued to unload itself. After much hard work stripping the machine following attempts to install more recent packages from the AV supplier I was able to reinstall everything and purchased AVG AV software which spotted the virus straight away and removed it. Everything works great now. Thanks for the pointer in the right direction otherwise it could have been several days later when I noticed that the AV software was not working which could have exposed me much further. Thanks
