Word/Excel automatically shut down immediately after opening

MS Word and Excel shut down automatically immediately after opening.
It can be a new document or an existing document that is being opened. The application goes through the virus check, etc. displays the document and within 5 seconds closes.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling word and Office
I have tried replacing the normal.dot file
I have tried deleting the normal.dot file and reinstalling
The result is consistently the same.

Ken, Neither of thses quite fits. I get no error message. This however leads me to believe that the problem is probably in Windows OS rather than the application.

I have installed the application on both of my computers with the same OS; one functions fine, the other doesn't. The one that functions fine is not hooked up to the web (if that matters) The nonfunctioning one also has MS PowerPoint as the only MS product that is not on both.
