Using Office 2003 and have noticed that when clicking on file names of Word, Excel or Access files in Windows Explorer, the hourglass appears but the files never launch the applications to open. I have to use task manager to close out Explorer.

I AM able to open PowerPoint files by clicking on the file name, and can also open other files such as pdfs the same way.

But with Word, Excel or Access, I now have to open the application first and browse to the files which allows them to open normally.

Checked the file associations and recreated the ones for Word from another PC where it was working properly. But that didn't help.

Tried repairing Office and that too did not help. Have run out of ideas.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Vic

I'm not quite sure what you've done when you say you've recreated the file associations from another PC. The registry entries are quite complex and it is possible you haven't doen it completely. Better to get the applications to do it themselves. Go to Start > Run, and enter, and execute, in turn:

winword /regserver
excel /regserver
msaccess /regserver

Enjoy,
Tony

I'm working (slowly) on my own website

matt,
Double clicking in explorer should automatically supply the path of the file to be opened. As for the path to the apps, I've checked them and they are all in the "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\" folder, which is what is in the 'Application to perform this action' box in the File Associations window. Of course, the correct .EXE file is appended to the above path respectively.

Tony,
What I did was to copy each Action of the DOC file type from the FileTypes tab of the Folder Options on the Tools menu on the PC where it was working to my PC.

I ran all the regserver commands and the problem still exists.
