Hi all,

I'm having the following problem with a Word document:

When I try to open the document, a msgbox appears stating "The document name or path is not valid. Try these suggestions. *Check the file permissions for the document or device.* USe the file OPen dialog box to locate the document C:\Windows\Desktop"

Has anybody seen this and what exactly does this mean?? Is there any chance in recovering this document??

Thanks in advance!!!

How are you trying to open the document? What version of Word are you using? Is this on a network? I've seen this happen when using the File history method (click on File and select from the list at the bottom of that popup menu). If the document has been re-named or moved, Word will not find it and give you that error message. You need to use the File -> Open method.

Thanks for responding DaveStl,

Version 2000, no network, yep trying to open it. I've tried moving the document to another location, using Open > File, the only thing that I have done is open the doc using word pad, but the formatting is lost. So the user has transferred the text into a new .doc.

Anybody have a better way?

What version is the file being sent to you? I have seen that problem when someone sends me a "word document" in an earlier version of word that I don't have. I have also seen that problem when someone sends me a word perfect document.

If the document is truly corrupted I have used the WordRecovery tool from officerecovery.com to recover the documents. It cost some $ but I have salvaged many of a customers documents because of it. joegz
