word doesn't like starting

Hi,
I'm on windows 98se and using office 2000. 3 out of 5 times when I try to open word, it gets frozen. Botton left corner says "virus checking" I have Norton Sytemworks 2000 and it's virus checker is up to date.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Try re-naming or deleting normal.dot and see if that improves the performance.
