I am using Windows XP with Office 2003. When I open a word document it takes more than 30 seconds to open and the same too close, if not longer. These documents are on a server in my company, but I have the same problem if they are on my desktop. Any ideas? Thanks!

Are the ones on your desktop pointing to the server, or are they really local?

Won't make any difference if they are on your desktop then!! If you use them a lot and are not shared, I would recommend making a copy on your local drive.

I need these to be backed up on the server. I am talking about hundreds of documents.

The point being is...who cares if the ICON is on the desktop? You seem to be making a point that there is a difference between these and those on the server, which of course there is not.

But...never mind. Have you changed anything with the server recently? Plus, how about more details? How are you connecting to the server?

I presume "They" now refers to files definitely kept on your desktop, and definitely not links/pointers. In this case your machine may need a spring clean. Use a facility like SpyBot (free from SpyBot.com) and install and check your machine for spyware. Strangely I don't trust virus killers to be good with spy- and adware. Spybot does usually find extras.

If you have access to a windows doctor-type piece of software, perhaps your registry has a few glitches to iron out. Take a look for suitable freebies on computer mags in your local supermarket for a free clean up. Finally defrag your disk. This should make a significant difference if it hasn't been done for a while.

Good luck.

Seems that the customers Profile was corrupt. I recreated a new profile and word opens quickly. Thanks for the responses.
