Using Word 2000 each time I open Word I get a new Document number. Now it is at Document 47. I am NOT saving 1-46. When I do save a document I put a real name on it and place it in the folder of my choise.

Where are these ghost copies located at and why are they not being auto deleted?

Thanks in advance.

What you need to do is some heavy clean-up of temp files. Make sure all apps are closed. Then, Search for all *.tmp files and delete them. Search for all ~* files and delete them.

If this doesn't work, go to and look for PC clean-up Anne has some wonderful tips on her site.

Thanks, xlhelp.

Some things to know:

Document1, document2 are just temporary names (NOT file names!) that Word assigns documents during ONE session.

When you close and reopen Word, it should start over at Document1 again.

If it is not starting at Document1 after relaunch, then it sounds to me like Word might not actually be quitting when you close it, or you've got a corrupt normal.dot.

After exiting Word, hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Is Winword still in the task list? If so, select it and End task. Now open Word again. Document1? If NOT, then rename your normal.dot file as suggested in the steps at And if that doesn't work, continue the steps. The registry edit should be the farthest step you'll need to take, but keep us informed.

Thanks for the sweet words, xlhelp! Anne Troy

Thanks for the replys. I'll try both suggestions.

I found the “problem”.

I am using Word as my text editor in Outlook. Outlook is running all of the time, so each time I opened Word to create a new document I would see a high document number. Of course this was because each email was being counted in the document list. At least that is the way I understand it.

So, it seems, I really didn’t have a problem.

Thanks to those that replied. You sent me in the right direction, which helped me figure this out.
