A colleague is receiving word documents which crash her machine - she runs W2KPro and O2k.

She sends to me - I'm running XPPro and OXPPro and I open them no problem

I send back to her as RTF and from there out she has no problems.

The question is what is there about this document that goes so far as to crash her machine.

Hard to tell without knowing more, but I suspect a corrupted Word installation on her PC - Can she create Word documents OK?
Can she save your RTF as Word .doc type and then reopen it?

Yes she can create word docs OK.

She can't open this doc - it crashes her machine on openeing so "file | save as " dialog never becomes available to her.

Not only that - it behaves the same on a different but similarly configured machine.

My guess is that there is something wrong with the document itself.

Any graphics embedded within the word doc?

I've had a few here where the graphic has been copied and inserted into the word doc and it bombs out.

Possibly not the answer but maybe something to look into.

Mike - Your suggestion possibly is relevant.

AIUI this document is a price quotation for services.

The supplier has apparently been mucking about with his logo.

But why this should crash someone elses Word I don't know

Good question, most likely is an invalid memory ref (remember Dr watson in NT).

Hi.
Try deleting the Normal.dot File, it usually causes problems with word documents.

The file is located on:
Documents and settinigs\user\application data\microsoft\templates

Good Luck !!

Thank you for all your ideas - I'll follow this up next week
