I have one document that will update it's Word count every time you open it or switch to Word (so it becomes the active window).

Any ideas on how this can be stopped please (short of hitting ESC every time!)

Thanks guys.

Not quite getting this. What do you mean? Do you mean it displays the word count dialog?

Gerry

It shows 'Updating Word Count' on the Status Bar with a coloured bar moving back and forwards from left to right - it takes about three seconds to complete.

You probably have a macro running. There is no automatic word count feature in MS Word.

The Word count is invoked when some of the built-in document properties are called.

It could be that one of your add-ins is calling one of the built-in properties

Thanks.

I've tried using "winword.exe /a" before opening the document and the problem still exists. There are no macros in the document.

Sorry my mistake xlhelp, it appears to be in one of the document's templates.

Thanks for your help.

Only thing I can think of is:

Tools, Word Count, Show Toolbar, click on Recount to see if turns off. (I doubt it)

Whew. That is a not well designed macro. I certainly would find a persistent word count update every time a document is opened, or activated, VERY annoying. I guess you don't know WHY anyone would want this, but if you do...please tell us. I fail to see much purpose to this.

Is the value of the word count stored, or used somewhere?

Gerry

Reporters and writers are very fond of the feature.

Oh I can see a use for word counting. But what I do with that is a word count on file SAVE. This is put into the document properties so it is displayed in Windows Explorer. I can rest my mouse on a doc file in Windows Explorer and get the current word and paragraph count - without opening the file.

I question the update on OPENING a file. When you open a file it is not possible that the word count has changed from the last time it was saved. Therefore, if a count is desired on doc open, on doc SAVE, put the count in a text spot on a toolbar, or as a menu item ("Current word count = xxxx"). There are lots of possibilities for getting the information on doc open. I just don't see the need for the process on doc open.
