Word bogging computer right down

I have a Win XP Pro PC running Word 2003.
For the last few weeks, when working with Word, and often having nothing else open at all, the computer will screech to a halt. Almost seems frozen. Task manager shows CPU usage at 100%, but the only thing running is Word - and it's using 95% of the CPU.
Any ideas what may be up with this?
The PC is a 2.53GHz with 504M Ram.

Cheers,
Amber

If you look at the processes tab, is winword.exe using all of the processor, or is it another process such as a virus scanner. Even though no other "programs" are running, there are probably a lot of background processes running.

You could look to see what you have running in the processes to determine how much of your memory is being used by each as well. It's very possible that with only 504M Ram you are running into Virtual Memory which will bog the computer down greatly. This would not normally show up as 100% CPU usage though.

Hope this helps.

Yes, on the processes tab, winword is using almost all of the processor (95).

Is Word trying to read from a template it can not find?
