An old closed thread but I'm am having the same problems.

That is, Word (2000) automation is zippy in xp SP1 but in SP2 slows to a crawl. Unhappy users!!!

Has anyone had the same experience and/or, managed to fix it?

I don't think the IT budget setter will be happy if they have to upgrade to remove this small (MS introduced) problem.

Hi Dan

The machines causing problems are all, now, brand new XP SP2 (burnt in) and domains authenticated.

Rip XP SP2 off and throw Win2K on then the same users are working fine.

I have the exact same s/w on my lappie, runnning a burnt in SP2 version of XP and I get on just fine.

Go figure. Perhaps M$ want us to upgrade?

I think Tamar has a point. I have seen 2003 run a scan, can not remember if 2000 did it. (Wait till you see what 2007 does, you will go back to 2000!!)
Also Autorecover.
I would check the settings, though I do not know how you could overcome this in a multi user environment with each user setting

Tried with no anti-virus and no firewalls - no difference measurable!

Thanks for the thoughts

Just to revisit the issue of Word 2007 ...

I mentioned earlier that when I uninstalled the 2007 beta, performance went back to normal (with the beta installed, Word Automation was so slow as to be useless).

Today I installed the full version of Word 2007 (as opposed to the beta). I'm pleased to say that performance is still reasonably good. So, it looks like it was an issue with the beta.

I appreciate that this isn't the same issues that other folk mentioned in this thread, but it might be of some interest.

Mike
