We currently use Office 2k with Outlook XP. I found that I cannot use the 'Word as email editor' option as it is greyed out. It obviously works ok if Word XP is installed but does not seem to like Word 2k. I have tried to change the editorpreference registry entry but as soon as Outlook XP opens it reverts back and still shows the item greyed out.

Does anybody know a way of getting Outlook XP to use Word 2k as the email editor?

Thank you.

Hi TheGoat
Did you ever find the answer to this? I've got the same problem, but the other way around. I DON'T want to use Word as the e-mail editor, but I can't untick the box because it's greyed out! It seems this happens with whatever version of Word is being used, as we are using Word XP.

To both, it is never a good idea to mix office parts, for the obvious reasons

Eh? I don't understand what you are trying to say. Can you elaborate please? Can you help? We use Outlook XP and Word XP if it helps!
Airshot.

No I never got round it. Thankfully we are going Office XP in the new year so won't have two version running. Although apart from this feature we had no problems running multiple versions of Office.

Like I say, we're using XP all round. So don't expect the problem to go away when you upgrade! Good luck, and thanks anyway. Cheers.

That is not correct Airsot, please do not generalize because your setup has a problem.
It works just fine, but it is NOT recommended as it makes emails very big and HTLM or RTF can do the same.

As for your problem, switch your default mail format settings to RTF first, then see if you can check/uncheck it.

What is not recommended, and by whom? Do you mean using Word as the message editor? As I mentioned before, I DON'T want to use Word. That's why I'm trying to undo it. I would try your suggestion, but the option to compose messages in Rich Text is also greyed out.

ok, here we go:
It is not recommended to MIX Office versions, and that was mostly in reply to THEGOAT. That recommendation is by experience, not official.

In your case, you don't want to use Word, and it does not I suppose, so why would that setting bother you?

Surely there is some part missing in your setup, I would suggest a repair of your Office, after a backup.
Or.. at least check if you have the email.dot template present in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\1033.

Turns out it was a corrupt user profile. I deleted their profile and when they logged in again all was OK. Perhaps this'll work for you too? Good luck.

Aha, that explains it! A repair should have fixed it too.
