Hi,

I'm having troublwe with my Word 97 program. When ever I goto shut down Word it will usually cause a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death) with different errors. When I reboot my machine it goes to a DOS screen saying the the machine is ready to shut down ctrl-alt-del to reboot. If I boot with a boot disk and then sys c:, then boot to hard drive, and then run windows I get a vfat error. if I then boot to floppy and copy back my original msdos & io .sys files the machine will run. Someone here at work had tried to install th Office sr2 patch(first one, the one the pulled from their site) and since then this has happened.

I've tried un-installing and re-installing office, but no luck. Any ideas?

Thanks.
With Word closed, find all files named normal.dot on your C:\ drive and rename them to be normal.old. Relaunch Word to see if it worked. Please reply if it doesn't.

I have customized my Normal.dot file. I also use the same normal file on two other machines without any problems.

I will try your solution on Monday. I will let you know what happens either way.

I did read about early Office 97 SR1 not being fully compatible with Win98 and SR2. I may have to resort to re-installing Win98.
Phil

I renamed the Normal.dot files to *.old, and the machine still locked up, but it finally did reboot into windows after many ctrl-alt-del's. When I go to change the plain text style font to Arial 11, I can save and try to exit word, but it locks up and goes to that same DOS shut down screen. Is there a way to edit the normal.dot to change the text to Arial 11 as the default font?

I need to import ascii files into word and use Arial 11 as the font.

Thanks.
Phil

Most of us go through life not knowing what we want, but feeling damned sure that this isn't it.
Phil, if you care to leave your email address, I'll gladly send you some good ideas. Too much to retype and I've already got it in a draft message. Sorry, I can't post my email--my bosses will kill me if they know I do this for free! I've checked to be emailed if you repost.

I think I've got it working finally. I had to boot to DOS, remove both win98 & MS Office 97 exe, dll, vxd files, then re-installed both. I had to rid my computer of that SR2 release 1 patch that someone had installed on my machine.

Everything works now. I just have to fix up some minor losses here and there.

I would like to see your solution, so you please email it to me.
I sent it, Phil. Some people seem to be well aware of how to maintain their hard drive and some people have never heard of it. If you've seen it before, sorry for being repetitive!
