Hopefully, someone has experienced this and found a solution:

We recently relocated Word documents from a network drive to another location on a shared server. Although there is no problem accessing the new folders, it appears that new Windows 7 machines with Office 2010 cannot easily open documents now on the server. The message in the lower left corner indicates that Word is looking for something on the old network drive (which no longer is online). If we press <ESC> the document seems to load, but just not sure why we are getting this error.

Note: Excel documents open without a problem, as do all documents on our still existent Windows XP machines with Office 2002/2003.

Any ideas?

Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Can you post the message, it might provide a clue.

Cheers.

There really isn't an error message ... only "Connecting to <old network location> ... Hit <Esc> to cancel"

Then, hitting <Esc> opens the document.

However, if we double click the Word file from the new server location, the Word splash screen shows with the same message above, without the <Esc> part. We have to hit cancel to stop the open operation.

I am stumped ! ! !

Have a look under word options on the start button

There are a number of items in here that might point to a network location. Auto Save Paths, Templates, etc etc.

Have a good look through, there are some more options hidden under buttons such as File Locations on the advanced tab or Add-ins

Have fun. :)

Petty much sure it is looking for an old template location. Word will look for the stored AttachedTemplate in the old location. Unfortunately, you may have to batch process changing this.
