Here's the situation. Have a custom template that is added to all our Word installations. Copied to c:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP. We are talking about Word 2007 here.

Yesterday I had already placed a fresh copy of the custom.dot in the proper folder then ran the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. This added a second copy custom1.dot and there were duplicate commands in the Add-Ins tab. The user started to delete the duplicate commands and got the ominous warning . . .

Are you sure you want to delete this custom command. It cannot be recovered if deleted.

She had only deleted one command when I stopped her then removed the duplicate .dot and restarted Word.
As warned, the deleted command is gone. ok I thought I could just replace the custom.dot and restore the missing command. No such luck.

Here's the thing. If I drag custom.dot out of the STARTUP folder and open it, the custom command is there. When I put it back in the STARTUP folder, it is not.

Help?

Have you tried negotiating with the little green men?

I was gonna try that, but they were all at the ER (projectile vomiting). I guess now we know why they were green!

I even tried the blue guys! But i couldn't get a word out of them. :)

Anyone else?
