Hello all,

There really should be an easy solution. It is very odd that one user cannot save changes to his toolbar.

Just trying to save the envelopes and labels icon to his toolbar. Works on my word 2003 no problem and everyone else that I come in contact with. Here is what I am doing.

1. In word click on tools.
2. Then customize.
3. Left window go to tools
4. Right window scroll down and select envelopes and labels.
5. Drag the icon to the tool bar.

The icon is there and functions but as soon as I close word and re-open the envelopes and labels icon disappears for some strange reason.

You guys have any suggestions on why the icon will not stay saved?

Thank you,

Erica

Have you checked how many normal.dot files you have on the system? Don't forget to check hidden files also.

Are working off a network? If so, is word starting with normal.dot from the network?

Is normal.dot a read-only file?

Is the folder where normal.dot resides read-only?

When you go to Customize dialog box, does it say Save in "normal.dot"?

Erica

Are you doing this when logged in as the user?

Has he/she got Adobe Acrobat Writer v7 installed?

Cheers xlhelp and tf1 for your thoughts and troubleshooting questions.

1. When I ran a search there is no normal.dot files showing on the system. I also checked hidden files and also extensions and nothing.

2. Yes the pc is on a domain.

3. Is word starting from normal.dot on the network --- I am not sure how to answer that when I cannot locate normal.dot That must mean no I guess. ;) excuse my embarrassment.

4. When you go to Customize dialog box, does it say Save in "normal.dot"? It says document but if I click the drop down box "normal" is there but it will not save it as that option. (confusing)

I am logged in as the user and I checked also as admin. Same problem.

The user "he" has adobe reader 6.0 and 7.0, distilor 7.0 and acrobat 7.0 standard.

With word 2003 I know you can detect and repair and tick restore to default settings. I tried this but I needed the MS office small busines Edition 2003 disc. I think the user has it in his drawer but I couldn't go through them.

Could it be a corrupt normal.dot?
Did the user modify normal.dot?
Should I run detect and repair?
Should I re-install?

This guy is an executive so there is some pressure....

Thanks for your continued help on this matter.

There probably is a hidden file under
C:\Documents and Settings\(UserID)\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates

If there isn't one. Just startup Word and save a blank document to the above folder.

Under Tools, Options, File Locations, change the User Templave location to the file in the folder above. And then see if things work properly.

UserID would your Executives ID

Funny. I posted an answer to this some hours ago, but it hasn't appeared.

The problem you have is caused by Adobe Acrobat Writer v7. For years, the Adobe Office addin has caused Word to save normal.dot everytime Word is closed - even when no changes have been made.

Adobe's solution to the has been to block any changes to normal.dot - even if legitimate. They must have morons working for them. I have been told that there is a fix for this problem on the Adobe support pages.

Thanks tf1.....

As soon as I uninstalled adobe reader 7 I was able to make additions to the toolbar permanent. Now when I add a button it will stay.

What a pain. But I am happy for now...
