The pointer in Word 2003 is fine when in the area already entered, however, when it is moved to an area outside the "already entered" area, it changes shape, to include miniature lines of text, that change in position relative to the "bar" pointer.
I assume this is "Insertion Point Behavior" described in Word Help, and may be changed by going to Tools/Options/Right-to-Left tab. Unfortunately, I haven't got a "Right-to-Left tab" in my Tools/Options.
I haven't any idea how I came to change the behaviour of the pointer/cursor.
Has anyone any idea how I change it back to the normal I bar ?

Hi dja1,
This is Word's default behavior and is referred to as Click and Type. If you double click anywhere in the "unused" portion of your document, you can begin typing, and the text direction depends on where the lines where pointing when you clicked.

To disable this feature, go to Tools/Options/Edit, and uncheck Enable Click and type at the bottom of the screen.

Hope this helps,

Best,
