When I start a new doc, the margins are set to 1" on all four sides.
When I type, the top and bottom margins are 0".
But when I print or or show preview they are 1".

How can I fix this issue so it shows the proper margins when I type?

I suspect your white space is hidden. Move your cursor to the top of the "page". When the cursor changes shape, left click one time.
