I have looked in the event viewer, and there is no error reported. I ran it twice to make sure, with no results. It just freezes upon opening, and will not shut down without ctrl+alt+del
Are you double clicking on the file to open? Or are you doing file>open in Word? Is it just that file or does Word do this when opening empty? If Word does it by itself, it is probably a macro or something else that is starting with Word that is corrupted. Try opening Word in "safe" mode, I'm sorry I forget the command line. It could be "/safe" it is in Oulook.
Under Check for Office Updates press GO....this will scan your PC for whatever updates you need with any of the Office programs. This does require you to either have the Office CD in the PC or network access to the setup files.

I have run into the same issue with Microsoft Access. I would be in the database and all of a sudden the screen would freeze. Since then this hasn't happened but I'm not sure what the fix for it would be. I never had such problems with 2000 Professional.
I am facing a similar problem.I have word 2002 installed along with other office XP applications. When I open Microsoft word, goto File->open and then click on the drop down arrow in the Look -in field, the application freezes for quite a while. Even when I try to browse folders, it freezes. This is the case with all my office applications.Any solutions to the above problem.
This problem only seems to occur with a particular user of the machine. The same office suite works perfect when I login as a different user. I have a windows 2000 machine. Office XP is updated with all the latest service packs and patches. I did a repair and also removed the application completely and re-installed afresh but to no effect for this user. I also started word 2002 in safe mode. But same problem recurred.
I had the same problem. Check your network places entries and/or drive mappings for network resources that are currently not available. The file open dialog seems to check these - guess it tries to reconnect hence the delay.
