Word 2000 Table Not Splitting Between Pages 1

A client sends us .doc files that are created in 2002/2003 with large tables. When viewing the docs in Word 2002 or later the tables split nicely between the pages. When viewing the docs in Word 2000 it doesn't get split up & runs off the end of a single page. I found that if I go to Table Properties & set Text Wrapping to None the table then splits perfectly! Is there any way I can make that a global default vs changing the setting per document?

Thank you in advance for your time & help!

Hi Datanomics,

The text wrapping property is a per table setting, not even a per document setting, let alone a global setting. So no, what you're asking isn't possible. You could automate the re-setting of the wrapping to none via a macro, though.

It didn't occur to me that it would / could be a specific per table setting vs a general Word option. Makes sense now that you say it though.

Also I found a note at that mentions having the creator disable the table break option (3rd paragraph up from the bottom).

Yes, I did post to MS Newsgroups. I've ALWAYS posted to both Tek-Tips & MS Newsgroups (but no others). The person who replied to the MS Newsgroups posting gave me all of the necessary info to set up the macro as you had suggested.

Which is why macropod posted the link to the cross-posting page. If someone else, somewhere else has given you the information - if YOU do not tell us you have cross-posted, then we are wasting our time, duplicating things. And, in fact, that is the case here. macropod posted a completly wasteful post because your question was already answered elsewhere.

There is nothing inherently wrong with posting in multiple places, but it IS considered impolite to not mention it! AND, it (not mentioning it) works against you. If we come to realize you regularly cross-post - and you state that you do - then if we see a post from you here...we (I won't for sure) - will not bother to try and answer anything.

So, sure post multiple places if you must, but tell us please, and tell us if you have got an answer elsewhere. Anything less is rude.

It wasn't a wasteful post. I appreciate everyone's input & advice.

Just to be clear - I posted to both places simultaneously - just before leaving at the end of the day. Iin the morning there was a reply here & a reply there. Had I already gotten a reply there then I would never have posted the same question here.

I WILL mention a cross-post in the future & I truly apologize for any breach of etiquette. But after the tongue lashing I've gotten I doubt I'll be asking for help again here for a very long time - clearly I've ruffled feathers. My intent was not malice, it was just using all resources available to me since the matter needed to be addressed asap.

And not to worry, you've never responded to any of my postings in the past so your valuable time has never been wasted on me.

Well, if you choose not use the resources here, that is your choice. A "tongue-lashing" is not what was intended, we just wanted you to let you know. I do not think what was posted can be termed ruffled feathers, but it seems your own feathers are ruffled. Which is unfortunate.

Datanomics,

You have been a member for 3 years and have started 18 threads, posted 37 replies and recieved many good tips. Yet you have only responded twice to...

Thank Tek-Tip Contributor
for this valuable post!

The [purple]little purple Stars[/purple] accomplish several important things.

First, it gives positive feedback to contributors, that their posts have been helpful.

Second, it identifies threads as containing helpful posts, so that other members can benefit.

And third, it identifies the original poster (that's YOU, BTW), as a grateful member, that not only receives, but is willing to give tokens of thanks.

Clearly I AM pissing people off but it's completely unintentional! Again, I'm so sorry - if you read those posts I DO take time to say thank you but I guess I wasn't doing it 'properly' via the purple star.

Of the 18 posts, 1 was to the wrong forum (couldn't figure out how to remove it - so I just replied to it saying it was in the wrong place), 2 haven't gotten any response, 4 I posted my own response and the rest are either still pending (yes, even the Access issue from April 2008 which I'm waiting for a co-worker to get to) or I just now gave purple stars / additional purple stars.

Let's just clear the air once & for all... what ELSE am I doing wrong so I can apologize, rectify & hopefully post in the future with a clear conscious!?

(And I also apologize to anyone with the Word 2000 / tables issue who happens to come acros this post which has taken a turn from it's original content...)

Thank you for continuing here.

Nothing, you are doing fine. The fact you persisted and posted a response (rather than just go away) is definitely a positive factor in your favour.

One of the great part of Tek-Tips is that we DO (very much so) try and weed out leeches and trolls. This is a forum that tries hard to keep things professional; further, that it tries to foster a community. That means participation (giving, not just taking), and thoughtful consideration of the others here.

Which is precisely why we ask for the politeness of telling us when cross-posting. Again, I want to be clear, this is not about you, personally; and it is not about cross-posting inherently. It is about thoughtful consideration of others.

Skip aside (sorry Skip....I am just kidding; Skip is a senior member and has "senior moments" sometimes), no one is actually really pi$$ed off. So, dinna fess yourself laddie (or lassie, if that be the case). It is OK.

It's 'lassie'.

And Skip may have 'senior moments' but I'm a blonde. So we all have our handicaps.... ;)

Thanks. That made me laugh.

So, to end this off, and to put a gentler spin on the valid comments Skip made, we really do welcome people, but this site is "policed" (but that is not really the correct term) to try and weed out leeches (people who just take), or trolls (people who are just plain annoying). We try to make it truly a place for professionals. That word can be argued - and has been! - but it comes down to:

1. reasonable and professional language. Sorry texters, but truncated Twittery usage ("ur", etc. etc. etc.) will actually hinder getting good responses.

2. consideration and appreciation of the considerable effort and work "we" give as volunteers. "We" are not getting paid to help or assist people. It is done because we want to help and assist people.

Assumptions, or a sense of entitlement, will not help. People who demand answers, or a full code solution, either rudely, or by expressing a sense of entitlement, are dumped ruthlessly from here. I am not suggesting Skip was trying to be ruthless, far from it - he is a sweetie actually (sorry Skip, it was impossible to resist) - he was just trying to let you know some of the ways to help you use this site better.

We all like appreciation. There, that is it in a nutshell.

Except in Skip's case, where a nutshell is not....hmmmmmm....big enough? Small enough? Wide enough? Punny enough?
