Word 2000 Prompt to save template when exiting 1

Each time one of our users closes out of Word 2000, she gets the message "Do you want to save the changes you made to template_name.dot?", and the options are Yes, No, and Cancel.

The template_name changes depending on which document is open, no surprise there. She is not opening templates to modify them, only modifying Word documents (that presumably used these templates when first created).

Does anyone know why she is getting this message, and how we can turn it off? Please note, she is being asked if she wants to save changes made to different template names, not Normal.dot/global template. When she has a blank document open, it does show Normal.dot as the template in use.

What changes is she making? If she is making changes to qualities set by the template - like style attributes - she will be asked if she wants to save those changes to the template.

My apologies, she is getting prompted to save the template each time she closes a document, not just when exiting Word.

Here is the process she uses:

Creates new template
Opens new template
Pastes text into template
Saves as document

She is making changes to the style attributes in the document. However, even if she simply opens the document, makes no changes, and closes it, she is still prompted to save the template.

I will note that she has been using this procedure for a long time, and never got this prompt until she got a new computer. The old computer had and the new computer has Office/Word 2000.

Is there a way to disable the prompt?

And that is why. That is NOT the way to use templates, and yes, she will get asked about saving the template. Think about it.

It does not matter that she is saving it as a document. Word knows it is a template, and properly asks if you want to save the change made to the template. It is a template that was opened.

That is NOT the way to use templates.

For normal.dot: in tools>options, save tab, you can customise prompt for saving changes in this template.

Thanks all for your input...much appreciated.

I had the user do the following:

Open Word
Create brand-new template
Close template
Open template, File, Save As, newdoc.doc
Close document and template
Reopen newdoc.doc
Add text
Save and close newdoc.doc

And she still gets a prompt to save changes made to the template!

I must be missing something. If you open Word, then immediately open a document that used a template when first created, and make changes to that document, such as typing in text, why would you be prompted to save the template?

Is Word opening the template a document is initially based on behind the scenes when the document is opened? If so, how can we save a document that uses the template formats initially, but will not open it every time the document is opened (i.e. can we disassociate the template and document once the document is saved as a .doc)?

do u have cutepdf or similar add-in?

also, go through the following to find any hidden add-ins:

On the Help menu click About Microsoft Word
Click the System Info command
Navigate to Office Applications\Microsoft Word\COM Add-ins
Review each add-in listed on the right to determine if there are COM Add-ins listed that did not appear in the COM Add-in utility
For those that are not listed in the COM Add-ins utility and the Installed value is Yes tehn --->

Check Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and if you find an entry for the Add-in uninstall it
Use Windows Search to locate the add-in and rename it to prevent it from loading

You do NOT open a template to use it.

You clone a document from a template by using File > New and selecting the template you want to clone.

Do NOT open a template (.dot) file and do a SaveAs. That is not the way to use templates.

Yes, in a sense a template is opened when you open a document cloned from it.

If you make changes to attributes...say, change a Style attribute, then Word will ask if you want to change the template. If you mean "changes" like just adding text...then no, it will not ask.

What exactly do you mean by "changes"?

Again, though, an template should never, ever, be opened for actual use. It should be cloned into a new document with File > New. Or, double click it from a file folder, or an icon on the desktop, or....

But you do not open the template itself.

I am happy to say the issue is resolved now. The user had a program called Complete PDF installed, which had an add-in installed in Word. Once I uninstalled the program, the problem disappeared. Great tip onedtent.
