If I need to select a large block of text which extends below the what's visible on the screen, and I drag down to the bottom of the screen, the text zips up far too rapidly to allow me to end the selection at the right place.
My PC is only a Pentium 667 but it is simply too fast to do a large selection.
How can I slow it up?

To highlight one word: Double-click
To highlight a sentence: press down the CTRL key and left click on one word in the sentence.
To highlight an entire paragraph: Triple click a word in the paragraph.

:)

To highlight one word: Double click.
To highlight a sentence: Press down the CTRL key and single click a word in the sentence.
To highlight a paragraph: Triple click a work in the paragraph.

Thanks tazman99.
Yes, I can select a paragraph at a time, no problem, but if there are several paragraphs, extending over a page or two in a large document, I would like to be able to grab the whole lot in one action without the text scrolling up with blazing speed. It was easy with my 386 - it was slow enough, but current PCs are too fast.
Try it with a large document and you'll see what I mean.
Then try with a Website document while connected to the Web. MS Internet Explorer allows a slow scroll while selecting, then accelerates if you drag a little lower on the screen. This is exactly how I would like it in WORD!

I remember this frustrating problem, here’s what to do. Go to the start of the text that you want to select and single click your mouse. Hold down the shift key, single click at the beginning of the selection, whilst still holding down the shift key scroll to the end of the text you wish to select. With the shift key still held down single click your mouse where you want to end the selection. Hope you can make sense of this, it does work. Good luck.

Ah yes, of course. I should have thought of that. That's the same as selecting a group of files when using Windows Explorer - 'Shift' for first and last of a group, 'Ctrl' for random selection of several at a time.
(You need to make allowances for my age - I am 65)
I've tried it out in WORD - it works fine.
Thanks heaps Greene!

P.S. I also found that the second click (at the start of the selection) is not necessary. Just position the cursor at the start, then scroll immediately to the end of the text, now hold the shift key down and click at the end of text. You don't need to hold down the shift key while scrolling. Try it!

Hi Merv,

Maybe you can also use Ctrl + A (Ctrl key and then press A) which is Select All, as you seem to indicate you want to go to the end of the text. If you need to go up a bit from the bottom then just press the Shift key and us the Up Arrow to get to where you want. I rarely use the mouse for selecting amounts of text, as I find Shift and the Arrow keys very convenient and maneagable.

Good Luck from across the Tasman in Melbourne!

Hello Peter
Thanks for the further suggestion.
I see what you mean, but selecting right to the end of a document is no problem - WORD will scroll there in a microsecond with a normal click & drag down. The problem arose if I wanted to stop before getting to the end. The previous suggestion from "greene" covers it nicely.
Regards
Merv

This is a known issue with Word 2000 and previous versions. Word 2002 fixes this problem (and strangely enough installing Word 2002 fixes the problem in Word 2000 if you have it installed at the same time.)

You'll have to use the shift-click method for the best results. You don't have to continue holding down the shift key. Just click once where you want to start, then shift-click where you want the selection to end.
