I've recently had computer trouble and decided it was time to thoroughly clean my hard drive; so, I formatted my only disk and reinstalled Windows 98 (OS, Calculator, Character Map, and Dial Up Networking -- nothing else -- exactly like my previous installation) and the drivers for my hardware (SB Live, Diamond TNT2, Speed Stream 4060 DSL modem, Microsoft Keyboard and Mouse, and my Motherboard). Afterwards, I installed Office 2000 Pro (Word -run all from my hard disk-, Excel -rafmhd-, Front Page - rafmhd -, and Office Tools - rafmhd-). With everything installed, Front Page and Excel work fine, but Word crashes when I create a new document and often just when I start the program. It's possible that the normal.dot file is bad, but I think it may be something else: While trying to resolve some terrible driver installation problems related to my SB Live, I've formatted my disk three or four time (I like extreme solutions to my little problems) and each of these times, Word has acted in the same manner. (Even before I installed the SB Live drivers that were resulting in my other problems). Does anyone have any ideas about how I might solve this problem? Thanks.

Wow. Been in the wars. Try re-registering Word with the /r switch as it may be something to do with the registry entries.

You mention having made a clean install of Office2000Pro after reformatting etc. Did you install the latest service pack on top of that + security patches? If not, try that!

You can download service packs etc from Micro$oft at (make sure to use Internet Explorer).
