This is the first time you mentioned that you have a SATA drive. Why did you wait so long!!?
This is now totally different as you have to add in the sata drivers before you can install win xp or even win 98, thats why you are having trouble.

Someone is gonna have a real good laugh at this one!!! Course nobody else asked either, lol.

I dont have a sata drive yet but i can still give you instructions, i think.
First, you dont have to wash your cd's if you dont want to.
But you do need the sata drivers. Do you have the sata drivers? If you dont you have to get them from the hard drive mfgr website.
If you have the sata drivers then keep them handy and put your win xp cd in the cdrom, set your bios to boot from the cd and as soon as it starts you look at the bottom of the screen and it will say press Fsomething, i think its F3, but it will say right on the bottom that if you want to add some 3rd party drives press "something". You press what it says and then add in the sata drivers. You put the sata drivers on a floppy and have them ready to go when you boot from cd.

I guess i should have asked!! Win 98 and win xp dont have sata drivers, you need to install them first. No wonder you have had all these problems.

Garebo,
Thanks, i'll try what you say and i'll get back to you.

ok, definitely if you do it right, it will work, so you can go ahead with win xp. I dont know if a restore cd will work as i dont know if the sata drivers are in it or not.

The only thing missing right from the start was the sata drivers for your sata drive. Really, its my fault, i should have asked for more details, im just learning how to help others here.

I can't seem to find the driver for my Drive.its seagate sata drive 160Gb, I went to their website i could not get it, Any idea.

Where did you buy the SATA drive? They should supply you with a driver install disk. The key to press (during install) is F6...F3 exits install. Just do what Garebo says, and watch the screen.

Thats exactly what i have been telling you. You need to get the drivers.
However, i just remembered, i do believe you have to get the sata drivers from your motherboard mfgr. So you have to find out who made your motherboard and get the drivers from them. If you cant do it, just give us the numbers and letters on your motherboard and we'll help you out.

I think you have tried your dell cd and it doesnt work, right? So it doesnt have the sata drivers then either.
So you have to go to the motherboard mfgr.
YOu can also contact tech support at Dell, they will give you the web page where you can get the sata drivers, or they may even be right at Dell. So contact Dell, their email support might be the best way, not sure on that. Maybe you are still under warranty so you can call them?

Also, give us more details. How old is this machine, do you have a warranty, do you have a manual, did you read the manual, is there another cd for the motherboard and drivers or just one cd? This way we can help you faster!

To micker377: thanks.

Where will i find the name of the motherboard, Is not in the manual and I check the motherboard i can't see anything,

Ok, we may have to wait for someone else. I know some about sata but i havent installed any yet. And i am just thinking that you may have downloaded the wrong drivers.
The webpage you showed, i went there and i see two sets of drivers, one for sata raid and another one i dont understand.

Intel(R) 82801FR SATA RAID Controller
Intel(R) 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller

these are the two sets of drivers. Which did you download and try to install?
I would have to know if your motherboard is equipped for raid or not. If not then it could be that you may need to try the AHCI controller drivers instead, and that could be why you are getting the error message.
Maybe someone will come around and confirm this for us.
I dont see any harm if you try the AHCI drivers while we
are waiting to double check on this.

Garebo, THANKS we got it work,i download the driver but i was suppose to extract then put on to a floppy, but i just put like that and it wasn't reading but then i just click it and it open i just extract the driver it a floppy and BOOM it Work,So thanks once again I went to othersite and no Body could help but this site rock.Thank you all

Yes, i figured you would see that you have to put it on floppy! Sorry i didnt mention it!

Hope i still earn a star, lol!! We got the job done. You know your stuff pretty well or you wouldnt have been able to follow all this!

Also, you should still be able to see some numbers and or letters on your motherboard. Sometimes its on the side of a pci slot too. I am pretty sure Asus makes some motherboards for Dell.

Thanks, and yes, i have seen some people get 5 stars for the same thread and no work at all!
But thanks very much, glad it all worked out. This is a great place for tech help, so many people with so many good ideas and such knowledge!
Some of these guys are incredible while i am just learning. This post is proof as i should have asked you for more info at the start, lol.
But, hey, we got the job done and thats what counts. Considering i havent even touched a sata drive yet i think i did pretty well, lol.
