Ok I've just gotten a new comp from a friend and all works great. Except that If I have my harddrive on IDE1 it's fine, but it won't detect my cdrom on IDE2. If i hook up the CDrom on IDE2 and change the jumpers it sometimes finds that, but then it won't detect the hard drive! what's up with this?

What jumper settings do you have on each drive ?

If you only have 1 harddrive, the preferred setup with a cd is to have the harddrive as primary master on channel 1 and the cd as primary master on channel 2. The bios will need to be set to auto for both of those positions. The harddrive will need to be jumpered for a single device on its channel (if you added this cd after you got the computer, the harddrive is probably jumpered correctly now. the CD will need to be set to master for its channel.

If it doesnt work with that arrangement, you could then try a) replacing the ide cable for the cd drive, b) completely removing the cd through device manager and letting it autodetect again when the system restarts.

Ok well i've tried everything i can think of and nothing works. I have a 48x cdrom and then a 32x burner (this is the one which won't respond). My harddrive is on channel 1 as master and my 48x is on channel 2 as master, with the burner as a slave. The green light is constantly on (like it's reading something) and it won't respond when i try to open it. The 48x runs fine and so does my hard drive. Although now it boots up slower. If i put the hard drive setting to PM2 it boots fast like it used to. I'll list my jumper settings and maybe you guys can give me a workable combination. For my hard drive is PM2, CS, Master, Slave. and for both cdroms is Cs, Master, Slave. Any more bright ideas?

And when it is set up to be used by itself? And there shouldn't be any problem with using M/S rather than cable select.

Using 40 wire or 80 wire ribbon? Slow boot up is signalling that the secondary slave is having a problem reading. And different length ribbon cable might make a difference.

And what happens in BIOS if you try autodetect?

40 wire IDE cable. And yes i've tried to connect it individually for M/S and Cable. It never works. I've usded IDE Removable and Atapi Removable, and CDRom and Atapi Other. On all of those except CDrom it's worked, but then it always messes up in windows (or if i have to go into the bios) and then won't work.

This doesn't have a connector that is backwards from most, does it?
Plastic shell with the notch at the bottom.

Sounds like the drive is defective, but would try a 80 wire cable and cable select to see if there might be a noise factor involved.
