I have a problem computer that was spitting out audio with a crackle only when playing DVD's, so I updated WMP. This caused DVD's to not read at all. I rolled back, uninstalled, restored, reinstalled, etc., all to no avail. This system was operating fine with WMP 10 and NERO as the codec. Now I have nothing no matter what I do. Any ideas on how I can fix this pronto?

More re-inforcement for not rushing into new versions at their release, especially from M$. You might want to try downloading VideoLan's media player. It's a free download at :

It plays all audio & video formats. If WMP can't play it because of a missing codec, I simply play it on VLC.

Hope this helps.

I can't do that. It's an office environment and there's no chance in hell I'll be able to get them to use a new program. I'm well aware of the VLC media player and it's fantastic awesomeness, but it won't work for me here. I need to get this machine back to using the Nero Codec for WMP and playing a DVD on this machine. Any ideas on where to start? Could I uninstall WMP 11 and download WMP 10 and go from there? Is there a way to manually point WMP to the codec?

I would reinstall NERO, as it will set the correct links etc. in the registry...

if that does not work, then try to go back to a RESTORE POINT before you had all these problems...

Well, I started by repairing Nero. This didn't work, so I rolled back the WMP update. That was a failure, so I tried a system restore next. Turns out it didn't like that as much either and still refused to cooperate. I then tried a full removal of WMP and it's components, as well as Nero, and then reinstalled them in the same order. Nero still will not load through WMP 11, nor can I get it to function in any previous WMP version, though XP still states that I have a DVD Codec via the dvdupgrd /detect command.

until we can figure out what is 'twisted' (would have used the synomym but...) you could use the portable version of VLC from a USB stick, thus you would not install it and yet you would have a great app doing your bitting...
