A friend is running Windows 98 SE and at startup gets the following: WJView Error ERROR:Unable to locate system class: java/lang/Object. What does this mean and how can it be eliminated?
Thanks,
David
Go to Start/Run, type msconfig, click OK, click the Startup tab, uncheck the boxes for all items that contain wjview, wjview.exe, or similar, click OK, and do not restart at the prompt.
Go back to Start/Run, type regedit, click OK, click the + next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion, click on Run to highlight it, on the right half of the screen look for values that contain reference to wjview.exe, right click on them, click Delete, and click Yes to the warning. Repeat for HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run.
Close the Registry Editor, and restart the computer.
I'm not a java user or programmer, but it seems an ActiveX control in C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files is looking for a registerred Java class / object
Could be Spyware / malware
What version of IE? (IE4 needs 4 in that folder)
What Browsers do you use?

thanks for saying it's IE6, which "needs" nothing in the DPF folder, to operate correctly..
Assuming it's not a Spyware / Virus issue, i'd say check all the java VM versions.
If you type JVIEW
from an MS-DOS prompt box.....you'll see the Java VM version (MS or SUN - and the various switches available)...you may need to rip one out - or alter the settings. I think we have a JAVA / Programmers forum here that may be of more help.

I ran AD-AWARE last week and some Spyware indications came back. Due to time, unable to finish the scan. A NAV scan (with updated virus definitions) revealed no viruses.
