I've had this problem as well. It could be any of the following:
If you have multiple networks, make sure you have the subnets defined within SMS.
Make sure you have your client access points set up correctly - if you are running a domain environment then SMS would of during installation automatically used your domain controllers as access points.
My client wont install on machines that are not part of my domain (ie: in a workgroup). For these machines I had a choice: do not install SMS client or add them to the domain.
Make sure all your SMS accounts have domain admin permissions.
