Wiring to the distribution frame 1

Hi all

We’ve moved into a new office and the telco (Openreach) installed a PSTN line as far as the distribution panel in the ground floor plant room. We didn’t have a DP of our own yet in our 6th floor office. Awaiting them to come back and install a DP for us to finish the PSTN order. Meantime we have no alarm, so my question is can I just run copper wire to where the phone line is currently terminated in the ground floor plant room? Straight down the riser. Would the signal carry that far over simple jumper wire? Or is there a lot more to it?

If you can use CAT5 or better that would increase the range, however simple jumper wire would work.

It really depends on the length of run and surrounding environment (eletrical cabling etc ) , never run parallel to electrical cabling unless you have shielded cable (even then keep it as far away as possible), the tighter the twisted pair the better the signal will carry , just get yourself a reel of cw1308 telco cable from as mentioned screw fix or similar.

Yes 1308, cat5e or jumper will be fine over that distance.

Thanks all. Bit of a job getting the cable down the riser, through ceiling voids and bulk heads! Good to get the hands dirty. Jumper cable worked fine and isn't close to any electrical cabling

More bad information going around! Category rated cable has nothing to do with POTS/PSTN service. It never has! It has no effect on how the line operates... The Category rating of cable ONLY applies to data in the form of Ethernet, Token Ring, and FDDI LAN technologies on twisted pair cable. NOTHING ELSE!!!

By the way, was there not some sort of house cable existing to your office? Typically, multi-floor buildings have a telephone house terminal on each floor that feed from the MDF.

We all know that, however CAT5 and it's like comes in a box, you drag it up or down the lift shaft and it won't tangle.
And you end up with 4 pairs !

Please don't run any comms cables in a lift shat due to fire regs

The only thing that should be in a lift shat should be lift equipment

4 pair category 3 cable is still available, as is 25 pair. Nowadays, 4-pair CAT3 is just CAT5 that fails manufacturer testing.

Depends what cabling you have available (if any) and how many pairs you think you will need.
If up to 3 use CAT5 or CW1308 (3 pair).
If 5 or more use the appropriate multicore. (10 pair, 20 pair, 50 pair etc.
Easier to install 1 larger cable than several smaller.
It's always worth allowing for more pairs than needed in case some get damaged.
