I just built a new computer using the Abit IC7G MAX II motherboard and a Pentium 4 2.8 processor. The system is running Windows xp professional.

I hooked up my Linksys WUSB11 Wireless USB Adapter and managed to hook up with an existing network. However, the signal strength is low or very low and occasionally there is no signal. When the signal is low or very low, I can usually connect to the Internet, but sometimes that is not possible. I used the exact same Linksys USB unit in my old computer, in the same location in the house, and regularly had excellent signal strength.

I've also installed a Netgear MA-311 wireless card. This registers and low signal strength and I cannot connect to the Internet using this card.

The rest of the network configuration is a WAP11 Wireless Network Access Point which is connected to a D-Link DI-707 Router, which connects to a cable modem.

Can someone help?

How far are you from the WAP & does it have to penetrate any major walls?

I am about 30 feet away from the WAP. The WAP is in the basement and I'm on the second floor.

The strange thing about this problem is that I used the same wireless equipment on my last computer, from the exact same location, and my signal strength was always excellent.

I brought the WAP into the room with my new computer and the signal strength did increase to excellent, but a little while later I got a "no signal" reading.

As I've been writing this reply, my signal strength went from "low" to "very low" to "good" and now back to "low". I am able to use the Internet, but I cannot access the WAP via the SNMP Configuration Utility.

The WAP seems to be working correctly. My wife uses a laptop and consistently gets an excellent signal. I'm thinking that there has to be something wrong with the new computer (although I can't think what that might be) or with the configuration of my wireless connection to the WAP. Any suggestions about where to start looking will be appreciated.

I already did make sure that the 802.1 authentication on the client is disabled.

Here's another piece of this wierd puzzle. I just discovered today that after my computer comes out of standby mode my system tray wirless icons says "wireless connection unavailable." For some reason I decided to click on the IE browser. To my surprise, I've been able to successfully use the Internet all afternoon.

As long as I can continue to have access to the Internet, I guess I won't worry what messages the software is generating. I do appreciate the help.
