Hi there.
I'm a total wireless newbie, so would appreciate any help on the following (probably simple) problem. I'm trying to set up wireless internet access on a new laptop:

I have the following:
1. Desktop with Standard Ethernet NIC
2. Laptop With Wireless NIC
3. Netgear Wireless Router/ADSL Modem
4. Broadband Cable Modem from supplier (can use either Ethernet or USB)

All items are new and not faulty as far as I'm aware.

These are currently set up as follows:
PC NIC via Ethernet Cable to Router
Cable Modem via Crossover Ethernet Cable to Router
Laptop via Wireless NIC to Router

I have encryption and mac filtering in place and working.

At the moment I can:
Get internet access on the PC (so all working)
Connect to the Router from the Laptop

What I can't do is get internet access on the laptop.
:-<

Now, the order that I power on the Router and Cable Modem have an effect here. If the Router is powered on first it becomes 192.168.0.1. If the Cable Modem is powered on first then the Router doesn't get this IP address.

Now, regardless of which is powered on first, the Laptop can connect to the Router.
If the Router is 192.168.0.1 then I get an icon to say that I have not only a network connection but also an internet connection - but it's useless as the internet won't work.
If the Router isn't 192.168.0.1 then I get a network connection only, and don't even get this 'useless' internet connection.

Ok, some thoughts:

1. Should I connect the PC to the Cable Modem directly via USB to cut it out of the Ethernet setup? Is that confusing things?
2. Should I use IPCONFIG to check the PC's Default Gateway and enter that into the Laptop?

I'm close to working this out, but could someone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks very much.

I would not do option 1. Let your router provide you some protection from the Internet and you may want to share printers or drives between machines.

What are you basing that your laptop is connecting to the router on? Can you ping the router from the laptop?

I find many problems with wireless are corrected by updating the drivers on the wireless on the laptop.

Hi there.
The laptop authenticates and connects to the wireless network. It can also ping the router's IP Address.

Using IPConfig, what is the gateway set to?

Can you ping your PC? Can you ping anything on the Internet?

Hi there.
It's at home so I'll have to check this later I'm afraid.

Thanks for your help.

You should not be using any "crossover" cables. Only regular ethernet patch cables (stright through).

Is everything set as DHCP? If so, you shoudl have the same settings on the laptop as the pc. Try going through the 'internet set up wizard' on the laptop. Also go to a command prompt, and type 'nslookup and see if that then gives you an IP address. Let us kno whow you get on from there.
