Ron - I just reached out to my dealer BlackBox (NuVIsion) about the state of the NEC Wireless PSIII. He was actually in Florida at an NEC Dealers conference when I caught him. He indicated that they met with NEC yesterday to talk about this specific topic.
He said the meeting got pretty heated at times as it was clear that NEC was making some marketing decisions without consulting engineering. Their approach has been to discontinue the PSIII line and force customers to an IP world and onto NEC's MH150 / MH160 mobile handset product line. The concern from the NEC dealers is obvious. NEC is planning to discontinue a product line without having a replacement product that doesn't require an upgrade to the customer's network infrastructure.
We (Honda) are not the only company in this situation so this does help things out. The NEC dealers pressed hard yesterday and it looks like NEC will open a production line back up for the manufacture of "some number" of devices. He indicated that he has 200 on order for himself (he has a hand full of customers - including Honda - that use the product). He expects delivery of these units in June. He will keep us informed as he hears more information from the discussion in yesterday's meeting.
