Hello All,

I am a newbie to this wireless networking. Please help me out.
I have P4 with windows xp prof and got linksys router on that desktop.

I have got sms wireless adapter (802.11) on laptop.

the problem is when i connect on internet on laptop the connection is kicking off frequently every two minutes.

to eliminate this on advanced options in the wireless connections i had unchecked the qos packet scheduler and the connection is unlimited( I mean not kicking off). But the real problem is the network connection is now unsecured.

how can i eliminate this kicking off?
how can i make my connection secured.

Also is it true that firewall should be off in wireless networking?

Your help will be truly appreciated and thanks for your time in advance.

You definitely want the PC Firewall to be on in a wireless environment. Your network is more vulnerable in a wireless enviornment than a wired.

QOS is Quality of Service and should not have anything to do with security. For security, you want to use either WEP, or better yet, WPA and preferably WPA2. You will need to set this up on both your laptop and the wireless access point.

As far as being kicked off, you may want to check the PC and access points log files to see what is happening. It may be related to power settings on your laptop. I would check those first.

Are you saying that the desk PC's wireless link is OK, and just the laptop is dropping out? If it's just the laptop, then dput's likly to be right WRT power options. If its both, try changing the RF channel on the router, some are not very good at hopping about when they see interference.
All the best

thankyou dput and jamesbird. I will go thru this and update you on the same. I definetely try first to change wep and go for the next step of changing the channel.

thanks once again.

YOu might also want to check what other wireless lans your PC has connections to. It may well be that your laptop is finding another WLAN and conencting to that - you can prioritise what LAN you want to connect to when you view 'available wireless lans'.
