I'm trying to connect my home desktop with my work laptop using a wireless link. The laptop has a built in wireless card so I bought a usb wireless dongle for the desktop.

At the moment I can connect (Ad-hoc) up fine using the "B" standard (11Mbps) but when I force the desktop dongle to use only "G" standard (54Mbps) it won't make a connection. Why would this be the case? The dongle and the laptop card are both "G" standard rated. Any suggestions?

What speed is the usb on the desktop? If it is usb 1 or 1.1 it is 12mbs..speed of the bus. usb 2.0 is 480 and should work as long as the 2 wireless adapters are fully compatible with each other. For best results, use adapters from same company.

The usb is defenitely usb 2.0. The laptop has a HP card in it and the usb dongle is from Gigabyte. I don't see why these two devices shouldn't be compatible. They are reletively new pieces of hardware.

I'd question why they need to be "forced" to run at the higher data rate. Usually the connection will run at the highest rate possible. One usually equates low data rates with poor signals. What sort of distance are we talking about between the two machines?

What models of wireless adapters can achieve 54 Mbps transmission rate under Ad-hoc mode?

Wireless PCI adapter : GN-WPKG
Wireless USB adapter : GN-WBKG
Wireless CardBus adapter : GN-WMKG

This is from the FAQ on gigabytes web site...you might get the results you are looking for with a wireless router or access point.

addendum to the last post, not sure if this means only with each other, or in any wireless g environment. what does the utility for the usb card tell you? no signal, no network, noisy network? different channels tried? how far away? and walls and other blocking objects in the way? what is the laptop model?
