How to I get Internet Explorer working on a wireless connection, but at the same time, keep my existing network connection? The wireless connection is not on the same IP framework as the network. The gateways are different. When I remove the gateway for my network, then the wireless connection works. If I keep the gateway as is and wireless network as is, network connection works fine, but wireless doesn't know how to get to its wireless gateway. I run the command : route delete 0.0.0.0 (gateway_address for network)

In the past, i used to disable the wireless network only and be able to use my local network, but now, I have to disable the network connection to use the wireless connection.
Any suggestions on how to keep both, or at least, switch between the 2 but without disabling the network card since I need this for all at-work connections to my servers.

Caveat first--I'm not in any sort of networking position, but I've supported some products at my company where I have to know enough to be dangerous.

I'm assuming that there are sites that you can only access via wireless, and vice versa? If so, can you set up static route tables for the wireless card vs the wired NIC?

you should be able to add static routes to point some IP addresses to your wireless gateway and others to your wired card.

basically the IP stack needs to be able to decide on a definite route - in your case it is likely weighing up the metrics (quality of the link) and deciding that your network card provides a better route for your connection. if you want your card to randomly decide which network card to use (you can't define what subnets you want the wired card to connect to etc.) then I think you will have problems.

the commands to look at (xp, 2k etc.) are: -

route print
route add (network address) mask (subnet mask) (gateway ip address)

hope this helps

Dave

thanks, i spoke with our net guy here, the proxy is setup internally to mask to local area lan...i just delete my internet route and add the new one...bummer that i can't telnet outside of this building though on the lan side..
