I have two notebooks and a wireless router. one is a Dell Insprion and the other an Averatec. when I configured the router to WPA encryption the dell Notebook picked it up. I tried the same thing with the other notebook and it didn't work. I thought it might have been the network card and I bought a PCMCIA card (Motorola WN825G)to replace the built-in wireless card. It still its not able to connect. I went through the settings and nothing. everything matches the Dell and it wont go through. I see the network but when I try to connect it reads "aquiring address" then fails.

What am I missing?

OK, so are you able to connect to the internet with the Dell or are you just seeing it as connected to the network?

Also with the averatec, make sure you have the correct SSID entered into the wireless networking settings along with the correct WPA password you set.

I'm able to connect to the internet with the dell but not with the averatec. the ssid is correct. I see it I choose it but all it says after I enter the password is aquiring network address. it hangs there for a while then it gives me either limited or no connectivity or not connected. that is with wpa. I tried it with wep and no problem and it had me wondering is it the card or the program in the laptop? maybe something isn't registering. I tried everything I know.

Dinobot2,
I know you did not say this, but is sounds suspiciously like what happened to me when I attempted to install a software firewall which turned out to have a corrupted file in it.

Are you letting Windows control the settings or are you using the config utility from the card manufacturer? What OS is on the Averatec? Have you checked the router's status screen to see if it is assigning an IP to the Averatec? (If it is then your config on the card is probably OK but something is keeping the Averatec from getting the reply.) You could try manually assigning the IP address.

At first I let Windows control the settings of the card and because that didn't work I switched to the software from the manufacturer. I went back and forth and still nothing. Windows XP Pro with service pack 2 is installed on both the Dell and the avtec PC. the router is assigning IP addresses. when I connect to it with the dell it picks up the next address not in use and I am able to see it on attached devices.

Try setting both to WEP instead. I had an IBM Desktop that would not see the WIFI network with WPA. I tried it a few times, but it just would not connect, so I switched to WEP, and both machines were fine.

The thing is I don't want WEP. WPA is supposed to work and I called Linksys on this becaue its their router. after about an hour and a half with them on the phone they coudn't get the card to work either.

any other suggestions?
