Sorry, I know this might be an Windows XP SP2 issue, but since I have a Linksys router, I thought someone here might have some issues like myself and could offer some help.

I have an HP N5470 with Windows XP SP2. It has a Linksys wireless card model WPC54G. I have had SP2 installed for a few weeks on my laptop, but after a few reboots, it cannot connect to my network.

When I hover the mouse over the network icon in the system tray, here it what is says:

Signal Strength: Very good
Status: Limited or no connectivity

I tried reseating the card. It seems to try to aquire an IP on the network, but with no luck.

I have spent about an hour scouring the Linksys site and googling the problem. There are a lot of posts but no solutions.

Can anyone offer some advice?

Thanks,
Mark

See this thread: thread916-928990 (type it in the search box above). It might solve your problem.

It sounds similar to mine (can connect to the wireless network, but not to the internet).

I'm experiencing the same problem, only since 2 days at 3 different sites. Almost all concern an Acer Laptop with Centrino technology, meaning the wireless NIC is Intel. Although there's also a Dell portable with Linksys Nic. Disabling firewall is no solution. If I connect wired there's no problem, only wireless does not obtain an IP address. There seems to be a huge problem in the making here. Just google for "limited or no connectivity". You will notice that several users are experiencing the problem since or little after installing SP2. The only site which does not mention this problem is... microsoft.

I'm working on this intensively. I will let you know when i come up with a solution.

Did you apply the new Dell drivers for that adapter released in late October?

The only thing different is the new warning message, which can be unchecked on the adapter property sheet, or in Group Policy.

I found out the following. The problem also occurs with another portable equiped with a 3Com PcCard on a machine with Win XP an NO SP2 !!!! So, it's most likely not a SP2 related matter. Also, my other portables already had SP2 installed for 2 weeks before the problems started.

Now I tested changing the SSID on my wireless router and guess what... both machines are able to connect and reconnect, receiving a proper IP address from the DHCP server. And this several consequtive times.

It keeps getting better, I changed back the SSID to the old value and.. my laptops can reconnect to the network again.

There seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel but I still don't see a reason what causes this strange behaviour.

I'll keep posting my findings here !

My general advice for SP2 wireless adapter failures is to redo everything: uninstall the adapter completely, check for newer driver updates (there have been many post-SP2) and reinstall every setting from SSID to channel assignments.

My second piece of advice: force a rebuild of the Winsock service stack under XP. Start, Run, cmd
netsh winsock reset catalog

Wait for the message, and reboot.

I will look into some of your suggestions.

As far as this not being an SP2 thing, in my case, it has to be.

After installing, my connection stopped dead in its tracks. I uninstalled SP2, it came right back. And I went through this once more with the same results.

Regardless, this seems to require more time and research on my part.

If I have any success, I will let you guys know.

Thanks for all the input.

Mark
